Southern Fried Chicken in Cast Iron Dutch Oven

1 frying chicken

1 egg, beaten

2 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. black pepper

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1 tsp. paprika

1 tsp. salt


Heat 1 1/2 to 2 inches vegetable oil, shortening, or lard in 5 qt. dutch oven on top of stove.

Cut up frying chicken, rinse in cool water and pat dry with paper towels.

Combine garlic poweder, black pepper, flour, paprika and salt in shallow bowl.

Combine egg and milk and mix well.

Dip each piece of chicken in milk mixture then roll in flour mixture. Gently shake off excess flour mixture.

Place in hot oil (each piece should be covered half way up the sides) and cook until brown. Turn once, cover dutch oven with lid, lower heat, and cook an additional 7 - 8 minutes until done and browned.
